«Today we delivered to the Russian Defense Ministry another batch of new modernized Su-30SM2 fighters. Aircraft of this type have proven their high efficiency over the years of operation and are very important for our country’s defense capabilities. The number of units delivered is unknown, but from the video it can be confirmed that at least two Su-30SM2s were handed over to the Russian Naval Aviation.
Su-30SM2 Upgrades
The Su-30SM2 fighters represent an evolution of the aircraft in service with the Russian Air Force and Navy. The new aircraft were modernized to Russian Defense Ministry specifications with an avionics and engine complex developed for the Su-35 and Su-57.
Of the Su-35S, the SM2 incorporates the powerful PESA Irbis-E radar and NPO Saturn AL-41FS engines (manufacturer’s designation is Izdeliye 117S), with higher thrust, lower fuel consumption and lower life-cycle cost.
And from the Su-57 it incorporates the OSNOD multi-channel data transmission and communication system (an integrated communication, data exchange, navigation and identification system).
OSNOD is designed to provide real-time control of various types of aircraft during land, sea or air operations. OSNOD terminals can be installed on airplanes, helicopters, warships, ground vehicles and fixed stations. The system is distinguished by its versatility, high immunity to interference, high multi-channel capability and flexible architecture. This equipment was also selected for installation on the TU-22 and TU-160 bombers, which are in the process of being modernized.
