Miami International Airport (MIA) moved 2.7 million tons of cargo in 2021, surpassing the previous record of 2.3 million tons in 2020, this represents a 17% increase for the second consecutive year.
International shipments increased 17% to 2.2 million tons, while domestic shipments increased to 500,000 tons. Miami (MIA) ranks as the top international cargo airport in the U.S. and ninth worldwide.
«I am delighted to see MIA have another record year in cargo shipments and expand its role as the cargo gateway of the Americas, further increasing the transport of essential goods and life-saving supplies around the world,» said Daniella Levine Cava, Mayor of Miami-Dade County.
The continued growth of cargo movement at Miami International Airport (MIA) is thanks to major expansions by several operators at the Airport’s facilities.
In November 2021, DHL Express completed a USD 78 million renovation and expansion at Miami (MIA). This investment includes an automated package sorting system, expanded facility space to 206,000 square feet, and a 70% increase in the workforce with the creation of 731 jobs.
In December of the previous year, FedEx completed a 138,000 sq. ft. expansion at its Miami (MIA) hub that required an investment of USD 72.2 million. The company’s facility expands to more than 282,000 square feet. Improvements include a new customs clearance area and a new 70,000 sq. ft. cold chain facility. This expansion has created hundreds of new jobs during the northern winter season.
