As we reported, American Airlines and JetSMART announced today the signing of a letter of intent through which both companies will move forward with a codeshare agreement for flights between the United States and South America, and which also proposes the entry of the US airline to the capital of the ultra low-cost airline with a minority participation.
American Airlines is currently the North American airline that offers the largest number of connections with Latin America, from its hubs in Dallas, Miami and New York. JetSMART is in full growth, and already has bases in Chile and Argentina, and plans to add Peru soon, and continue its development in Latin America.
A very important Latin American market for American is Colombia, where it offers flights to 6 cities in that country. JetSMART has operations to Bogota and Cali, and in August will add the Medellin connection, reaching three routes to and from Chile.
The Chilean country is the low cost carrier’s main base, and Argentina is its second subsidiary. American Airlines has a significant presence in these markets, with operations to the capitals of both countries from Dallas, Miami and New York.
The agreement between American and JetSMART will strengthen both the connection to the United States and the low cost carrier’s operations in the markets in which it operates. Due to the pandemic, JetSMART still has several restrictions on its international flights, as a consequence of the limitations in the different countries. From 2022 we will be able to see the airline’s true potential in Latin America.
Seats offered by American Airlines in markets where JetSMART is present:
ARGENTINA
- Dallas – Buenos Aires – Dallas
- New York – Buenos Aires – New York
- Miami – Buenos Aires – Miami
The information on Argentina is a forward-looking projection, since international operations in that country are limited as a result of COVID-19. Dallas and New York have cargo flights on both legs, without passengers, and Miami has only one daily frequency.
If it were not for the restrictions in Argentina, American Airlines would have one flight per day to Buenos Aires from its three most important hubs in the United States.
