The worst air disaster in South American history will be turned into a Netflix series
The accident of flight TAM 3054, which occurred in 2007 at Congonhas and resulted in 199 fatalities, will be depicted in a Netflix documentary series.
Operated by a TAM Linhas Aéreas Airbus A320, the aircraft veered off the runway on July 17, 2007, while attempting to land at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo, on a day marked by heavy rainfall in the city.
On that flight, which had departed from Porto Alegre, there were 181 passengers and 6 crew members on board. During the landing, the plane overshot the end of the runway, crossed Washington Luís Avenue, and crashed into a TAM Express building. The disaster caused the death of 199 people, including 187 occupants of the aircraft and 12 people on the ground, according to our partner outlet in Brazil, Aeroin.
Investigations determined that the primary cause of the accident was an incorrect power control setting, as one of the throttles was not placed in the idle position. This was due to an outdated Airbus instruction, which suggested this procedure in the case of an inoperative thrust reverser, as was the case with one of the A320's engines, registration PR-MBK.
With one engine still generating enough thrust, the aircraft failed to stop when landing on runway 35L at Congonhas. Additionally, deficiencies in the airport's infrastructure were identified, such as the absence of grooves on the runway, which help drain rainwater and reduce the risk of aquaplaning, factors that also contributed to the tragedy.
This accident remains the deadliest in Brazilian commercial aviation and will be the central focus of Netflix's documentary series titled Congonhas: Tragedy Foretold, with a release scheduled for April 23.
Details about the production have not yet been revealed, but a brief teaser was released on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 26. Below is the preview:
