FAA Extends Aviation Workforce Development Program Through 2028
The FAA reauthorized the grant program for training pilots and aviation technicians through 2028, with funding of up to one million dollars per project. The initiative aims to address the growing demand for qualified personnel and promote diversity in the sector.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has continued the Aviation Workforce Development Grants program, aimed at fostering the training of pilots and aircraft maintenance technicians. Reauthorized by the U.S. Congress under the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, the program will remain active until the end of the fiscal year 2028.
The initiative supports education and recruitment of new aircraft pilots and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operators. It also facilitates the transition of military members and veterans into aviation careers. Additionally, it seeks to increase representation from historically underrepresented groups in the aviation sector.
In 2023, the FAA awarded $13.5 million in grants to over 30 schools and organizations, underscoring its commitment to workforce development.
Requirements and Funding
Eligible applicants—including airlines, certified flight schools, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and local, state, or tribal governments—can request grants of up to $1 million per project per fiscal year. Qualifying projects may include educational programs, scholarships, internships, simulator development, and career outreach activities.
The FAA emphasizes that this program is competitive, with grants awarded based on the quality and quantity of submitted proposals. Further details on evaluation criteria, application procedures, and eligibility are available on the agency's official website.
By addressing the growing demand for qualified personnel, particularly pilots, the program aims to sustain and diversify the aviation workforce while preparing the industry for future challenges.
