Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA) is carrying out an investment of around 7 billion Mexican pesos (US$340 million) in Monterrey Airport (MTY) in order to strengthen it as the main HUB in the north of the country.
Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of OMA, announced through his Twitter account that airport constructions are 25% complete.

Data obtained through Aviacionline via OMA statistics indicate that Monterrey (MTY) mobilized a total of 11,176,555 passengers in 2019, making it ranked as the fourth busiest airport in Mexico. From January to August 2021, it recovered about 45.38% of passenger traffic with respect to pre-pandemic levels.
Nowadays, the air market in Monterrey is led by low-cost operators such as Viva Aerobus and Volaris. Based on data obtained by Aviacionline through the Cirium platform, the airlines hold 62.95% and 14.30% of the seats offered per kilometer respectively.
American Airlines and United Airlines are the main foreign airlines in Monterrey, accounting for 2.91% and 2.56% of the market share.
The work carried out is aimed at renovating and expanding the airport in Nuevo León’s main city: specifically, the modernization will increase passenger capacity by 50% to 6,000 passengers per hour.
Aeromexico recently announced a new intercontinental service with the introduction of the Monterrey (MTY) – Madrid (MAD) Boeing 787 Dreamliner route, making it the airport’s only long-haul flight.
OMA currently manages and operates 13 airports in the central and northern region of Mexico, of which Monterrey (MTY) in 2020 is ranked fifth in passenger traffic nationwide.
This project is part of the airport group’s Master Development Plan of more than 11 billion Mexican pesos (around 535 million pesos) for the modernization and expansion of its airports.
