It crossed the entire state of São Paulo before reaching Campos do Jordão, one of Brazil's most visited winter destinations.Manufactured in 2013, the aircraft had flown for Amaszonas Bolivia. However, the airline ceased operations in mid-2023 due to financial difficulties after being acquired by a Brazilian entrepreneur. Following the airline's collapse, the aircraft was reclaimed by its owner (lessor) and transported to Gavião Peixoto. This town also serves as a storage hub for Embraer and hosts assembly lines for the A-29 Super Tucano, KC-390 Millennium, and F-39 Gripen.It has been confirmed that one of the reclaimed jets will be repurposed as a tourist and hotel attraction, serving as a suite for an inn in Campos do Jordão. A rare Boeing 727 trimotor, once used for the transport of high-profile criminals, was auctioned off in the United States at scrap value.The aircraft in question is a C-22B, the military version of the rare 727-35 (derived from the 727-100) by Boeing, which was operated by both the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Department of Justice as part of the Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System (JPATS), nicknamed Con Air.The nickname derives from the phrase Convict Air, since those traveling on these planes were individuals convicted by the U.S. justice system, often high-risk criminals. The name gained popularity with the release of the 1997 film of the same name, starring Nicolas Cage.Currently, JPATS uses Boeing 737-400, 737-700, and 737-800 aircraft, while the 727s were retired from service many years ago, along with the McDonnell Douglas MD-82. Tom Cruise, actor and 36th Honorary Naval Aviator of the United States Navy (US Navy), has been awarded the Distinguished Public Service (DPS) medal, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian outside the Department of the Navy.
The ceremony was presided over by the Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, who highlighted Cruise&#8217;s impact in promoting the values and work of the Navy. «It was an honor to present Tom Cruise with the Distinguished Public Service award for his decades of support to the Navy through various films. His work has inspired generations to serve in our Navy and Marine Corps,» said Del Toro.
Since the release of Top Gun in 1986, Cruise&#8217;s work has contributed to increased recognition and public appreciation for the highly skilled professionals of the Navy. This cinematic portrayal not only reinforced the institution&#8217;s positive image but also led to an increase in naval pilot recruitment in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
In addition to his role in Top Gun and its recent sequel, Top Gun: Maverick (2022), which reignited interest among younger generations in the opportunities offered by the Navy, Cruise has portrayed other military characters in films such as A Few Good Men (1992) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989).

William Austin, a drone specialist, reviewed images and testimonies of the sightings in New Jersey and concluded that many of these cases are explained by conventional aircraft, telecommunications tower lights, or even small drones used by individuals.
<h3>Navigation lights: a key to identifying aircraft</h3>
Aircraft, whether commercial, private, or drones, are equipped with navigation lights and anti-collision lights that fulfill a crucial purpose in air safety. These lights help identify the position, direction, and movement of an aircraft, especially during nighttime operations.

Authorities have urged the public to report any sightings and provide additional evidence to continue the investigations. For now, most reports appear to be explained as legally operating aircraft in flight, rather than extraterrestrial phenomena or drones of unknown origin.

The epidemic that wasn’t: recent drone sightings are nothing more than conventional manned aircraft

On December 17, 1903, on a cold morning in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the world changed forever. What began as an improbable dream, the obsession of two brothers who built bicycles for a living, culminated in 12 historic seconds. Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved what no one else had before: powered flight.
Though the first flight covered a mere 120 feet, humanity crossed an invisible threshold between the possible and the impossible. This was not just a technical achievement—it was an act of unwavering determination and faith in the future. It was the moment humanity took its first step into the skies.
<h3>Building on the Shoulders of Pioneers</h3>
Orville and Wilbur Wright were not alone in their pursuit. The road to flight had been paved by pioneers who had dreamed and failed before them. The German glider pilot Otto Lilienthal, who conducted over 2,000 glider flights before dying in a crash, had proven that controlled gliding was achievable. His work inspired the Wrights to take flight from theory to practice.
Other minds, like British engineer George Cayley, had laid the foundations of aerodynamics as early as the early 1800s, defining key forces such as lift, drag, thrust, and gravity. Meanwhile, American inventor Samuel Langley had attempted powered flight but failed spectacularly, his aircraft plunging into the Potomac River. The Wrights learned from these efforts and failures, understanding that the true key to flight was control—mastering pitch, roll, and yaw.
Their genius was in combining observation, experimentation, and a deep respect for physics. Using their mechanical expertise, they designed a lightweight engine, constructed their Flyer I out of spruce wood and fabric, and developed a system of wing-warping for lateral control. What they achieved wasn’t just a flight—it was the first controlled, sustained, and powered flight, a feat that redefined what was possible.
<h3>The Day the World Took Off</h3>
On that December morning, the Wright brothers made four flights. The first, piloted by Orville, lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. The final flight of the day, piloted by Wilbur, reached 852 feet in 59 seconds. The world had taken off, and there was no going back.
Yet, like all revolutionary achievements, their success was not without controversy. Across the Atlantic, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont was making his own mark on aviation history. In 1906, Santos Dumont publicly demonstrated the first airplane to take off unaided by catapults or rails: the 14-bis in Paris. This led to debates over who truly achieved the “first flight.” Supporters of the Wrights emphasize that their controlled, powered flight in 1903 marked the true beginning of aviation, while others argue that Santos Dumont’s fully independent and public demonstration set a different milestone.
Regardless of the debate, both the Wright brothers and Santos Dumont shared a common ambition: to free humanity from the ground.
<h3>What Came After Kitty Hawk</h3>
The Wright brothers’ work did not stop with that historic flight in Kitty Hawk. Returning to their home in Dayton, Ohio, they set up a testing field at Huffman Prairie, where they perfected their aircraft. By 1905, the Flyer III could fly for over 39 minutes, covering miles at a time, making it the first practical airplane in history.
Yet the world was slow to embrace their achievement. Protective of their innovations, the Wrights sought patents and refused to share details, leading many to dismiss their claims. Recognition finally came in 1908, when Orville demonstrated their aircraft in the United States and Wilbur stunned audiences in France with public flights that proved their mastery of powered flight.
Wilbur, the older of the two, became the face of their work in Europe, while Orville continued testing and improving the aircraft back home. By 1909, the Wright brothers had founded the Wright Company, building and selling airplanes to governments and private buyers.

The Wright Brothers’ First Flight: A 12-Second Leap That Changed the World Forever

«To play, first you need to eat,» says a sign. And it seems so obvious that it hurts when you look closely and see that for many people, it isn’t. One December morning in Benavidez, American Airlines and the Banco de Alimentos Buenos Aires joined forces in an initiative to support Argentina’s most vulnerable communities facing food insecurity.
I had the fortune of being invited to share the work done by more than 50 airline volunteers from both Argentina and the United States. And, almost inevitably, a volunteer from an aviation media outlet joined in.
The volunteers prepared more than 500 food boxes, totaling over 2,500 kilograms, equivalent to 12,500 meals. These products will be distributed to local organizations before the holidays, in a significant and necessary logistical effort to ensure that Christmas tables have a touch of care and support for those in need.
The activity was organized by the Latin Diversity Network Employee Business Resource Group of American Airlines, highlighting its commitment to the communities it serves. «American has a nearly 35-year history in Argentina, and we are grateful to give back to this community that has been fundamental to our growth in South America,» said José A. Freig, Vice President of International Operations at American Airlines.
“Partnering with Banco de Alimentos is a meaningful way to address one of the most urgent challenges faced by vulnerable populations. We are proud to participate and help in an organic way, reaching out to the communities in the countries we fly to. We are sowing the importance of American Airlines in Argentina, not only for travelers but also to show how significant this country is to us,” he added.
Evie Garcés, VP of Line Maintenance at the company, was also present. We talked about humble beginnings, boundaries, and growth opportunities for those who work hard. She shared her story of going from the Dominican Republic to leading a key area at one of the largest companies in the world.
The Banco de Alimentos Buenos Aires is a nonprofit organization that, in 2023, distributed more than 3.8 million kilograms of food and essential products, impacting nearly 330,000 people and serving over 18 million meals. “At Banco de Alimentos, we coordinate with more than 1,200 organizations, delivering hundreds of thousands of products daily. This is possible thanks to the collaboration of our volunteers, who, with a high level of commitment, sort and organize food at our distribution center,” he stated.
Staff from the bank gave us a talk at the beginning of the day, stressing the enormous need to raise awareness about reducing waste. They told us that by cutting just a quarter of the food that gets thrown away, a significant number of unmet needs could be fulfilled.

After the presentations and interviews, it was time to assemble boxes, filling them with food, recipes, Christmas cards, and a bit of love: I witnessed and participated in the joy and emotions as the pallets of boxes were completed.

I went home with a special sense of satisfaction: this Christmas, at 500 tables, there will be panettone and pudding, cookies baked with ingredients from those boxes. And for us, who sometimes have everything and don’t realize it, it may seem like little. But when you look closely, you see that for many, it is not.
