Chile Reinforces Wildfire Defense with Coulson Aviation’s C-130 Hercules

Surf Air Mobility received four Cessna Grand Caravan EX as part of a fleet renewal plan, which will also be included in its electric propulsion program. Two of these aircraft arrive under a long-term lease agreement with ITC-AeroLeasing.
The aircraft were delivered at the Textron Aviation facilities in Independence, Kansas, marking the first delivery to Surf Air. The Cessna Grand Caravan EX are the first of an order for 100 aircraft, with options for 50 additional units.
Surf Air Mobility CEO, Deanna White, stated that «we are very pleased to immediately deploy these first four Grand Caravans into our network to further improve the profitability of our air operations. With our fleet order from Textron Aviation, we continue to fulfill our Transformation Plan, as each new Caravan will enhance our operational efficiency and provide an even better experience for our passengers.»
Surf Air Mobility is one of the most prominent regional airlines and one of the largest operators of passenger Cessna Caravans in the United States. The company acquired these aircraft as part of its expansion plan, aiming to strengthen its network of destinations and launch new routes.
ITC-AeroLeasing Inc. CEO, Mirika Nakayama, remarked that «we are delighted to partner with Surf Air Mobility to finance the initial deliveries of their Cessna Caravan fleet, and we believe in Surf Air’s leadership team and their ability to grow their footprint profitably with these new aircraft.»
<h4>Development of electric propulsion</h4>
<a href="https://www.surfair.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Surf Air</a> is developing its own electric propulsion technology for the Cessna Grand Caravan, in collaboration with Textron Aviation. The company intends to upgrade its fleet with electrified powertrains and also offer the technology to third parties.
To achieve this, the company has signed agreements with magniX, a leader in electric aircraft development, and the aircraft development company AeroTEC. Surf Air Mobility aims to obtain a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its proprietary electrification innovations. MagniX will supply the propulsion units, supported by its development of the EPU product family for aircraft electrification.
Meanwhile, AeroTEC will handle testing, provide engineering services, and support project management. Additionally, it will bring its expertise in certification programs before the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

In contemporary aeronautics, much has been debated about human factors, operational safety, and CRM, especially in relation to commercial aviation. This article addresses these disciplines within the context of general aviation, specifically in operations regulated by RAAC 135. The performance of pilots and crew members in non-scheduled air transport companies is a critical component for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of operations, both in executive and medical flights, where the latter presents higher risks and operational demands.
The regulation of the Safety Management System (SMS) in RAAC 135 follows international standards established by ICAO in Annex 19, which details the requirements for implementing and monitoring an SMS in aviation. At the national level, ANAC (National Civil Aviation Administration) oversees its compliance, supported by the DNSO (National Department of Operational Safety) and POI (Principal Operations Inspectors), who audit the operations of non-scheduled airlines.
Internally, each company&#8217;s operational safety manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the SMS, ensuring the identification and management of operational risks, promoting a safety culture, and guaranteeing compliance with local and international regulations.
The implementation of CRM within this complex socio-technical system is essential to minimize risks and ensure mission success. A key question arises: why do we talk about minimizing and not eliminating risks? The answer lies in the nature of the system: the human component is vital and, as such, introduces an inevitable margin of uncertainty. Additionally, risk is intrinsically part of the operational structure; no system can achieve 100% safety due to unforeseen variables and the impossibility of eliminating all risk factors.
For instance, in medical flights, even with the best safety protocols (checklists, notification, and reporting systems), a patient&#8217;s health can deteriorate unexpectedly, representing an unanticipated risk that cannot be completely eliminated.
Operational Safety Management
Operational safety management (SMS) is a systemic approach to identifying, assessing, and managing risks associated with aerial operations. In companies under RAAC 135, such as those conducting executive and medical flights, effective SMS implementation is crucial for protecting both passengers&#8217; lives and flight safety. Each company has an Operational Safety Management (OSM) Department responsible for supervising these functions.

Smith stood out for his ability to break design paradigms and take general aviation to new horizons. His masterpiece, the Aerostar, is not only a testament to his genius but also an aircraft that marked a before and after in the light twin-engine aircraft market. The interchangeable parts included the nose cone, nacelles, empennage, landing gear, windows, front and rear fuselage sections, wings, rudders, elevators, flaps, and vertical stabilizer. This approach, borrowed from the automotive industry, was complemented by the «Heavy Skyn» method, which reduced the number of components compared to other aircraft. For example, the wings had fewer than 50 parts, and the fuselage fewer than 100, improving safety by reducing cracks, material fatigue, and the likelihood of loose fasteners.

The chosen stage was the spectacular valley that hosts the Mala Rijeka Bridge, known for its challenging geography. “We were looking for a suitable location in the Czech Republic, but there were always obstacles, such as cables or proximity to residential areas. Twin Otter Rebirth: De Havilland Canada Announces Agreements for a Series 400 and a Guardian 400 Surveillance Aircraft

Coulson Aviation has secured a new 400 million AUD contract for 10 years with the Rural Fire Service (RFS) of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. Awarded after an open and competitive tender process, Coulson will manage, operate, and maintain the entire RFS fleet. This contract builds on the operator&#8217;s previous five years of experience managing most of the NSW RFS aircraft fleet.
This partnership is intended to boost local jobs and skill development, ensuring a robust response to fire seasons. The Coulson team will oversee a fleet of 11 aircraft, including a Boeing 737 FIRELINER Large Airtanker (LAT), two Cessna Citation, six Bell 412 helicopters, a CH-47 Chinook, and a Beechcraft Super King Air. The agreement aims to enhance NSW&#8217;s self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on international personnel by employing primarily Australian crews.
In coordination with the NSW RFS, Coulson will conduct rigorous training sessions and thorough equipment inspections as proactive measures to mitigate the devastating impact of wildfires and protect communities. The contract also includes expanding the apprenticeship program to develop the next generation of aviation personnel in NSW. At least two mechanical apprentices will join the aviation team, gaining hands-on experience with firefighting aircraft.

The company, recently approved by Transport Canada as an Approved Training Organization (ATO), plans to expand this model in NSW. A technology employing remotely piloted aircraft, or drones, initially aimed at the application of biopesticides for the biological control of agricultural pests, may be used in urban environments to help curb the proliferation of mosquitoes transmitting virus-causing diseases, such as Aedes aegypti, known to be the dengue mosquito.
Developed by the company Birdview, located in São Manuel, in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil, in collaboration with Embrapa Instrumentação, the solution sparked the interest of companies producing sterile Aedes aegypti in Brazil to aid in the eradication of diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and zika. The project was supported by the Fapesp Program for Innovative Research in Small Businesses (Pipe).
«By participating in the latest edition of the High Technology Entrepreneurship Training Program [Pipe Empreendedor], we identified some companies producing sterile Aedes aegypti interested in establishing a partnership with us to release the insect in urban areas,» says Ricardo Machado, co-founder of the startup.

The technology developed by the company within the framework of the Biota-Fapesp Program consists of a modular release and packaging system, integrated with drones, which performs the controlled release of adult insects in demarcated regions, minimizing induced damage and stress.
In the field, the technology allows the release, over crops, of insects to combat agricultural pests that are their natural enemies. In urban areas, the solution could be used to release sterile male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to mate with female mosquitoes – which bite and transmit disease-causing viruses and mate once in their lifetime. In this way, it is possible to reduce the insect population, experts estimate, because the females, not becoming pregnant due to the males being sterile, will die without producing new mosquitoes.
In eight years of activity, the company has conducted more than 15,000 flights for the release of biopesticides, over more than one million hectares. Among its clients are the São Martinho, São Manuel, and Suzano plants.
The mosquito release project is still experimental, and the company is attempting to close a partnership with breeders of sterile insects, who would assume the costs of the service. The values and the time required for the intervention to take effect are being evaluated.
«The solution can also be used to launch seeds with the aim of restoring forests,» Machado states.

Drones in the Fight Against Dengue and Urban Pests

Exactly two years ago, in January 2022, AEROIN presented the controversy generated by an entrepreneur after placing, in September 2021, an airplane on the edge of a cliff to become a tourist attraction.
At that moment, various media outlets in Indonesia and around the world reported the placement of the Boeing 737 aircraft at a location with a high view of Nyang Nyang Beach in southern Bali.
As described by the detik travel portal, Felix Demin, a Russian entrepreneur residing in Bali, purchased the airplane from a scrapyard in China and divided it into several parts for transportation and reassembly on the cliff in Indonesia.
After shipping, a team of workers took a week to reassemble the airplane at the designated location, to be transformed into a luxury accommodation. And thus, the controversy arose.
Bali&#8217;s zoning rules stipulated that constructions on an oceanic cliff or riverbank should be located at least as far from the edge as the height of the corresponding cliff face, which definitely did not happen with the Boeing 737.
Demin claimed to have the necessary authorizations and licenses to assemble and operate the Boeing fuselage as an accommodation site. According to the local portal, Demin&#8217;s claims of legality seemed to be endorsed by the silence of the provincial zoning officials, faced with the widely publicized «landing» of the airplane in a location that would stand out in one of the island&#8217;s most beautiful maritime landscapes.
The entrepreneur defended the project on the grounds that the presence of the airplane would help revitalize Bali&#8217;s tourism industry, which had been in crisis since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the country in late 2019.
Less silent, however, was the critical response on social media, which saw the airplane as a monstrosity that would only harm Bali&#8217;s global image. The public awaited more details about the proposed use of the aircraft on the cliff of Nyang Nyang Beach, while deciding whether the project would become Bali&#8217;s newest «attraction» or «distraction.»
And now, the incredible result shows that, regardless of the criticisms, the project was indeed carried out and is already beginning to stand out in photos and videos on social media worldwide. Even a wedding ceremony has already been held at the site in early 2024.

<a href="http://aviacionline.com/2023/10/nbaa-bace-daher-reaches-500-deliveries-of-its-tmb-900-aircraft-family/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daher</a> delivered the one hundredth TMB-960 to a customer in the United States. The aircraft was acquired by Titan Real Estate Investment Group through TMB&#8217;s authorized distributor, Avex.
Commercially launched in April 2022, the TMB-960 represents the fifth evolution of the TBM 900 series, benefiting from current turboprop technology and digital power. It is the latest evolution of Daher&#8217;s pressurized single-engine turboprop aircraft.
«My operating base is near Santa Maria, on the central coast of California, which has very limited commercial airline service. Therefore, having a personal plane is extremely valuable as I continue to develop my business,» stated Kevin Kaseff, president of Titan Real Estate Investment Group.

The Daher TMB-960 is powered by a Pratt &amp; Whitney Canada PT6E-66XT engine, complemented by a five-blade composite Hartzell Propeller. Both components are connected to the digital twin-channel electronic engine and propeller control system (EPECS).
This system optimizes the performance of the powerplant from start to landing, simultaneously reducing the pilot&#8217;s workload by integrating all functions and protecting the engine&#8217;s lifespan.
Daher established a recommended cruise speed of 308 knots, achieving a fuel consumption of 215 liters per hour. This consumption is 10% less compared to the maximum cruise setting for increased sustainability.
The TMB-960 is equipped with the Prestige cabin, featuring an entirely new environmental system produced by Enviro Systems. The interior boasts integrated LED ambient lighting on both sides of the ceiling panel and electronically adjustable windows. Passengers can customize the cabin ambiance from a Passenger Comfort Display (PCD).
Other enhancements in cabin style and comfort include ergonomically improved seats, USB-A and USB-C ports, along with individual cup holders and headphone hangers for each occupant.

Daher delivered the 100th TMB 960

This new simulator will support the company&#8217;s expansion plans, providing access to top-notch flight training, including initial type ratings and recurrent training for both new and pre-owned aircraft owners.
The Vision Jet simulator, manufactured by CAE, is already fully operational at the Cirrus Aircraft Vision Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Established initially as a Factory Service Center in 2016, the Vision Center campus has expanded to include an Experience Center, a Delivery Center, a Flight Training Center, an additional Factory Service Center, and a Flight Center/Hangar Complex.
The Vision Center also provides pilot training for its SR series single-piston aircraft. The SR series represents 32% of worldwide single-piston aircraft deliveries and over 77% of deliveries in the high-performance single-piston aircraft market.
Through the Cirrus Approach flight training program, all Vision Jet and SR Series training comes with a dedicated Cirrus Standardized Instructor Pilot (CSIP), individual training aircraft, and a diverse catalog of instructional video courses.
