Barbados and Togo Explore Business and Tourism Partnerships
Barbadian authorities explore opportunities in West Africa, assessing the possibility of direct flights to enhance connectivity between both regions.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Investment of Barbados recently met with a delegation from Agoé-Nyivé 1, a district in Lomé, the capital of Togo, led by its mayor, Akoété Adanbounou.
The discussions aimed to establish public-private partnerships in key sectors such as tourism, culture, and business.
Strengthening Economic Ties
Government officials emphasized that while diplomatic relations already exist between the two nations, the true goal of this partnership is to deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
"The purpose of this visit is to explore how we can strengthen our business sector in Barbados and assess the opportunities that Togo can offer. This is not just about traditional business and entrepreneurship but also about enabling young entrepreneurs to tap into Togo’s rapidly growing economy," said Chad Blackman, Barbados' Minister of Economic Affairs and Investment.
Expanding Trade and Connectivity
As part of its investment strategy, Barbados is looking to Togo, a fast-growing African economy that is home to the region’s largest port.
These potential agreements could also pave the way for direct flights between Barbados and Togo, reviving connectivity between the Caribbean and West Africa.
According to local media, this initiative draws inspiration from Antigua and Barbuda’s previous efforts to establish an air link with Nigeria. Between 2022 and 2023, Air Peace and Antigua Airways—a virtual airline—attempted to launch direct flights between the two countries. However, the operation faced controversy due to reports that irregular migrants used the flights to enter the United States or remain in the region.
Potential Airline Partners
One airline that could facilitate the Barbados-Togo connection is ASKY Airlines, based in Lomé.
ASKY has announced plans to expand its fleet with Boeing 787-8 aircraft to launch long-haul routes to Europe and China.
Currently, ASKY operates a network of 29 destinations with a fleet comprising:
✔ Nine Boeing 737-800
✔ One Boeing 737-700
✔ Four Boeing 737 MAX 8
